Term 2 School Holidays
Principal
Dear Fairview community,
We have just concluded a week of parent teacher interviews and sharing reports against the Australian Curriculum and Individual Learning Plans as well as providing evidence of learning through work samples. The positive discussions that have come out of this process shows the great learning that is happening in classrooms and across the school. Also, this week we have had four of our staff attend professional development around the Department’s new approach to improving reading through explicit teaching of reading skills and systems of support for when students aren’t yet at the expected standard with reading, the work in this space is very exciting. The initial work that we have undertaken around the reading priority at Fairview through our early years literacy support and upper years MacqLIT program has shown some great early indicators of success.
Over the past few weeks, we have had a number of exciting excursions and incursions, with our grade 5/6s attending the ‘Female Factory’ convict site in South Hobart and then having a pizza lunch at Legacy Park at the Domain. We have also been fortunate to see some wonderful music through the Tasmanian Symphony of Orchestra, Derwent Valley Concert Band and next week and excursion for our early years as part of the Festival of Voices.
In the sports domain our grade 5/6 students have been representing the school tremendously through the Winter Sports matches and next term there will be trials to represent the region at the Southern Winter Sports Carnival.
It has also been fantastic to see so many great things happening in the Launch into Learning space with the recent excursion to Bridgewater PCYC being a hit! If you are aware of students that are kinder age for 2025, please get them to contact the school office as we will soon be starting our pre kinder preparation sessions.
Coming up in the next week we will be undertaking a range of NAIDOC week activities (including our assembly) as well as finishing the term with a ‘crazy hair/free dress day’. I certainly look forward to our students continuing to demonstrate our STAR values during this time.
As always it is important to provide a safety reminder around cautious driving within and around our grounds. Students may be distracted when walking to or from school and we have a duty of care to maintain safe speeds as well as patience.

Prep Hammer
This week Prep Hammer have been learning about celebrations around the world.
The students have been looking at Chinese New Year.
This period is celebrated with a variety of events, foods, lanterns, fireworks and dragons.
2 Thornton
In 2T we have been focusing on phonics and how we can break apart and sound out words that are unfamiliar to us.
Recently, we have looked at the split vowel digraphs a_e and i_e.
To familiarise ourselves with these split vowel digraphs we created cards with a_e and i_e words and played a game that required students to write and say the word in order to keep the card.
3/4 Rose
In 3/4 R we have been learning how to create questions to collect data.
We went around to other classes to gather information so that we can represent out data on a graph.
A few students have already presented their findings to the class.
5/6 Bradshaw
In 5/6 Bradshaw we have been investigating matter and how temperature changes can affect items as they shift between states through evaporation or condensation.
We found as the items warmed up, the particles moved around more and giving a lighter colouration.
In contrast, the colder the items, the slowly they moved and the darker the particles became as they came together.
Art at Fairview
Grade P/1 Judges punched, sorted and arranged their mixed colours to create these trees.
Grade 3/4 Rose recycled their colour mixing pages to collaboratively create this meadow.
Music
It has been quite a busy end to the term for students in music. We have had a great term learning about instruments in grades 3/4 and finding our voices in grade 5/6. Students went to a performance by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra at 9B studios here in New Norfolk. The show highlighted the connection between emotions and sound. It was a wonderful experience for Fairview students to see such a phenomenal show performed by such professional musicians.
The early years and 3/4 students were also visited by the Derwent Valley Concert Band and were once again given a wonderful performance. Grade 3/4 students furthered their knowledge of musical instruments by speaking with band members and tried out various instruments. It was wonderful for our students to connect with their community and share the joy of music. It was a great day for all.
